What is a Consultation?
A focused consultation is the best place to begin when you have questions about immigration status, family petitions, court proceedings, criminal records, or a government notice. The goal is to understand the relevant history, identify legal issues, and discuss realistic next steps.
Capital Gateway Immigration offers consultations for prospective clients from its Sacramento office. Appointment format, availability, and consultation fees should be confirmed when scheduling. Your consultation is always with a lawyer.
What to Bring
-Bring complete copies of any documents that relate to the issue, including:
-Passports and identity documents
-Green cards, employment authorization documents, visas, and I-94 records
-USCIS receipt notices, decisions, requests for evidence, and interview notices
-Immigration court hearing notices and charging documents
-Prior applications and petitions, including applications filed by another lawyer or preparer
-Marriage, birth, divorce, and adoption records
-Certified criminal complaints, plea forms, minute orders, and dispositions
-A written timeline of entries, exits, applications, arrests, and court events
-A list of the questions you most want answered
Do not alter or omit facts because they seem embarrassing or unimportant. Confidential legal advice depends on complete information.
If Your Case Is Urgent
Tell the office immediately if you or a family member is detained, if a hearing or filing deadline is approaching, if you received a denial or removal order, or if travel is planned. Scheduling a consultation does not extend a deadline or create representation.
If you are in immediate physical danger, contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis resource.
After the Consultation
If the firm offers representation, the scope of work, legal fees, costs, and responsibilities will be described in a written agreement. Representation begins only after the required agreement is signed and any stated conditions are satisfied.
If more information is needed, the attorney may identify records to obtain or questions to research before a strategy can be finalized. Not every case is accepted, and a consultation does not guarantee that the firm will offer representation.
